36 NYC Matchboxes

For 36 days every spring, the design community turns up & turns out with endless unique takes on the alphabet by posting a letter or number every day. For 2023’s edition, I illustrated vintage-inspired matchbox labels for my favorite restaurants & bars in NYC. 

This project was awarded a Certificate of Typographic Excellence by the Type Directors Club in the Lettering category for their 70th annual typography awards.

Interactive Map


These matchbox designs weren't just static images to me – they represented real places in New York City! I knew I had to take it a step further. Putting them on an interactive map seemed like the perfect way to finish this project, and a fun way to sharpen my coding skills. I built www.36nycmatchboxes.com as a React app using Mapbox GL.
